Jack MacQuarrie: Diving Pioneer

Memories from Jack MacQuarrie
As you are probably aware, the club had its beginning as a special activity on the regular “Graduate Sports Night” at Hart House. I was a member of the Graduate Committee, and during discussions about what new activities might be added to the regular Monday evening program, SCUBA diving was suggested.

Since I was a navy qualified diving officer, I agreed to set up and teach the program. While the training program met all of the requirements for NAUI certification, I didn’t have the time nor the inclination to obtain certification as a NAUI instructor.

On completion of that first course, we asked Ben Davis and George Burt to conduct the necessary NAUI examinations. All members of that first group passed.

Initially the club was strictly a graduate member group. It soon was open to all Hart House members which, in due course, also included women.

Have an enjoyable anniversary celebration,
Jack MacQuarrie
