Discover Underwater Hockey

New this year:  Underwater club membership includes access to weekly underwater hockey sessions, there is not a separate pay as you go rate for UWH. So join the club today to begin participating in UWH this coming Saturday. More than 35 weeks of UWH are included in your annual membership.

Who can attend: Underwater Hockey is open to HHUC Underwater Club Members and Learn to SCUBA Dive Course participants. 

Free Tryout:

If you are not an Underwater Club Member (or enrolled in the Learn to SCUBA Dive course) and wish to come as a guest to try things out. Please contact us and let us know you wish to come (a week in advance please).

Description: The winter 2023 courses are each Saturday, and are FREE for HHUC Underwater Club Members. You can try one class for free on our September 23rd Open Night before registering and paying, but must RSVP by September 19th. Do not show up at the pool without RSVPing to  moc.liamgnull@hwu.cuhh.

Equipment: Bring your bathing suit.  For basic gear: You will require your own snorkeling gear (fins, mask and snorkel). If you are just starting we have a limited number of sets which can be temporarily borrowed. For Underwater Hockey gear: We have a limited number of caps, sticks and gloves that will be made available on a first come first serve basis (with preference given to beginners). If you have your own gear please bring it.

1-2 Guest instructors per week – accomplished Canadian underwater hockey players

Course Content

The first half of each session will introducing beginners and intermediate players to new skills, underwater fitness exercises and team building exercises.

A beginner who participates in all 5 sessions will learn to:

  • Be comfortable with the gear (snorkel, stick, fins, puck)
  • S-Dive
  • Get into the “ready” position called the Cobra position
  • Swim forward with the puck
  • Curl
  • Layoff
  • Basics of a Flick Pass
  • Basics of the 2-3-1 team positioning system
  • Common rules and fouls

In the second half of each session participants will play UWH game(s) designed to be engaging for players of all skill levels.
