Inner Space Seminars

Caribbean dive

Returning next year: One of our favourite activities, the Inner Space Seminars will return to the Hart House Underwater Club at the University of Toronto.
Send your suggestions for guest speakers to: moc.liamgnull@snoitacinummoc.cuhh

Hart House Underwater Club has wrapped up another fabulous series of Inner Space Seminars. Please see the links below to reflect back on our previous seminars.

When our seminars are online on Zoom, they are free and open to everyone, diver or non-diver, student, alumni or member of the general public. Everyone is welcome to tune in!

Thank you very much for everybody who made these seminars a big success:
– to you, the participants, for connecting with us to learn about diving
– to our fabulously entertaining and knowledgeable guest speakers
– and to our organizers from the Hart House Underwater Club.

HHUC is pleased to have presented an exciting series of seminars to UofT students, divers, non-divers, alumni and members of the general public — despite Covid-19 closures and uncertainties. This has been a shining example of HHUC’s participation in university life and virtual offerings from Hart House. Kudos to all for a very well-received endeavor!

Inner Space Seminar: The Great Storm of 1893 and the wreck of the “Riverside”

Shipwreck Riverside, Lake Erie

Monday, March 14, 2022, at 7:00 pm
Part of our “HHUC Inner Space Seminar” series at Hart House.

Guest Speaker: Kevin Magee
This is the story of the Great October 1893 storm that sank many vessels on Lake Erie, including the three-masted schooner, Riverside. Kevin Magee, co-founder of Cleveland Underwater Explorers (CLUE), will tell the story of one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded. He will also share the 2007 discovery of the Riverside shipwreck.

Kevin Magee Bio:
Kevin Magee began snorkeling as a kid in Florida, became a certified scuba diver in 1984, and is a mechanical engineer living in the U.S. His work involves the development of space experiments, including their design, fabrication, assembly, testing and flight operations. These experiments investigate the fundamental physics and behavior of combustion and fluids in microgravity. He has worked on projects of the Space Shuttle, International Space Station, sounding rockets, drop towers and parabolic aircraft. In 2001 he co-founded Cleveland Underwater Explorers, Inc. “CLUE” is a non-profit corporation whose members include divers and historians dedicated to researching, locating, exploring and documenting the shipwrecks and submerged history of the Great Lakes. CLUE has discovered and documented over 20 shipwrecks.

Inner Space Seminar: Vessels of the Great Lakes during WW1

WW1 ships of Lake Superior

Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 7:00 pm
Part of our “HHUC Inner Space Seminar” series at Hart House.

Guest Speaker: Walter Lewis
Walter Lewis presented a range of vessels that were active on the Great Lakes in 1914 and went to sea during WW1, including the Northwind that HHUC dove on in 1981. Some came home. Some didn’t. Some are Great Lakes dive sites now. Others are for the “vacation bucket list”! Some were split. Some were half lost. One ship even had to be rotated sideways to fit the Welland Canal. Enjoy the wealth of material in Walter’s historical perspective.

Walter Lewis bio:
Walter Lewis took up diving in 1990 specifically to dive on the wreck of the Cornwall. Subsequently he was awarded the S.O.S. Marine Heritage Award, and named Great Lakes Historian of the Year. He is known to many in the Great Lakes community for presenting the raw materials of history, gathered through the work of many researchers, particularly those people interested in shipwrecks.

Inner Space Seminar: Scuba Talk with Dan Lindsay

Monday, April 4, 2022, at 7:00 pm
Part of our “HHUC Inner Space Seminar” series at Hart House.

Guest Speaker: Dan Lindsay
It was a wide-ranging talk with Dan Lindsay presenting many of his gorgeous, crystal clear videos of deep shipwrecks of the Great Lakes, and a delightful look at diving in the Philippines. As a member of the Ontario Marine Heritage Committee, Dan and his team members successfully identified the famous mystery schooner in Lake Erie as the schooner St. James. Through his company, Sea-View Imaging, he has created images and video from tropical locations, the Andrea Doria, Tobermory, Lake Erie’s Long Point, the Empress of Ireland, Gunilda, Hamilton and Scourge, the Avro Arrow Project and many other shipwrecks in the Great Lakes.

Dan Lindsay Bio:
Dan Lindsay has been diving since 1972 and is a NAUI Divemaster and Tri-mix diver. Dan spent six years in the commercial diving industry working as a diver-EMT with Canadian based companies in the Beaufort Sea, Davis Strait and the Great Lakes. He is now a retired designer with strong interests in deep water wreck exploration, videography and photography.
