Inner Space Seminar: Drowning from the Inside Out: Immersion Pulmonary Edema, Tuesday, April 6, 2021

Immersion Pulmonaria Edema

Part of our “Inner Space Seminar” series at Hart House.
Drowning from the Inside Out: Immersion Pulmonary Edema, with Raimund Krob, OUC Advisor, Past President and Past Director of Sport Safety for the Ontario Underwater Council.
Tuesday, April 6, 2021

Immersion pulmonary edema has been noticed in scuba divers over the past two decades. A likely cause of the disorder is excessive elevation of the pressure in blood vessels within the lung, causing leakage of plasma into the air spaces. Immersion pulmonary edema is not related to lung barotrauma or decompression sickness. Cold water and a history of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disorders are risk factors.

  • Learn more about this potentially dangerous condition.
  • Hear the stories of three survivors.
  • Learn how to recognize, respond to and prevent Immersion Pulmonary Edema.
