Inner Space Seminar Fire and Fluids

Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, at 7:00 pm
Part of our “HHUC Inner Space Seminar” series at Hart House.

Guest Speaker: Kevin Magee
How well do you know the International Space Station or what happens aboard it on a daily basis? Kevin Magee is an accomplished scuba diver, shipwreck historian and mechanical engineer with the space program. He describes the International Space Station, and how it was built into the impressive laboratory that it is today. Learn about some of the important research and experiments aboard the International Space Station.

Kevin Magee Bio:
Kevin Magee began snorkeling as a kid in Florida, became a certified scuba diver in 1984, and is a mechanical engineer living in the U.S. His work involves the development of space experiments, including their design, fabrication, assembly, testing and flight operations. These experiments investigate the fundamental physics and behavior of combustion and fluids in microgravity. He has worked on projects of the Space Shuttle, International Space Station, sounding rockets, drop towers and parabolic aircraft. In 2001 he co-founded Cleveland Underwater Explorers, Inc. “CLUE” is a non-profit corporation whose members include divers and historians dedicated to researching, locating, exploring and documenting the shipwrecks and submerged history of the Great Lakes. CLUE has discovered and documented over 20 shipwrecks.

Inner Space Seminar: Drowning from the Inside Out: Immersion Pulmonary Edema, Tuesday, April 6, 2021

Immersion Pulmonaria Edema

Part of our “Inner Space Seminar” series at Hart House.
Drowning from the Inside Out: Immersion Pulmonary Edema, with Raimund Krob, OUC Advisor, Past President and Past Director of Sport Safety for the Ontario Underwater Council.
Tuesday, April 6, 2021

Immersion pulmonary edema has been noticed in scuba divers over the past two decades. A likely cause of the disorder is excessive elevation of the pressure in blood vessels within the lung, causing leakage of plasma into the air spaces. Immersion pulmonary edema is not related to lung barotrauma or decompression sickness. Cold water and a history of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disorders are risk factors.

  • Learn more about this potentially dangerous condition.
  • Hear the stories of three survivors.
  • Learn how to recognize, respond to and prevent Immersion Pulmonary Edema.

Inner Space Seminar: Engineering Inspiration, Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Atmospheric Diving Suit

Part of our “Inner Space Seminar” series at Hart House.
Discover the fascinating advancements in engineering, such as the ADS (atmospheric diving suit), from Ken Murray, senior mechanical engineer at OceanWorks International.
Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Recording of the presentation:
Engineering Inspiration with Ken Murray

Ken talked to us about his project with one-atmosphere suits and other advancements in undersea technology such as turbines. The ADS is a one-person anthropomorphic submersible which resembles a suit of armour, with elaborate pressure joints to allow articulation while maintaining an internal pressure of one atmosphere.

The ADS has been used extensively in both commercial and military applications, and offers a unique and cost effective solution for the completion of many underwater tasks in depths of up to 360 meters (1200 feet). Smaller crew sizes, reduced training requirements, no decompression, unlimited vertical excursions, system portability, and lower capital equipment costs are some of the advantages the ADS has over traditional diving.
